Don't let the funky titles scare you. Along with the work I have done I have pursued education throughout most of my life. I have, among other things, studied psychology, computers, geology, physics (quantum and meta), comparative religions, and a few other interesting areas. But it is what I have learned outside of formal education that has served me the most.
The Reverend thing came later in life. I'm not a practicing minister, though I am working on an online ministry of a somewhat different sort. But, please don't worry, I won't preach at you and I seldom quote chapter and verse!
The Doctor/PhD thing is in an area of study that has long been of interest to me and gave me a better understanding of some of the work I do. These titles, and three bucks fifty, will still get you a morning coffee in a few places.
I do practice spiritual marketing, much as described by Joe Vital in the late 1990s.
Spiritual marketing, now sometimes called inbound marketing, has little or nothing to do with religion and is more about the Law of Attraction and running your business from a place of positive flow, love and spirit, instead of from negative doubt, hesitation and worry, which seems to burden so many.
Inbound marketing is about giving before receiving and having the understanding that in so doing new business will continually flow to you as a result.
I am both a believer in, and a practitioner of, Napoleon Hill's philosophy, "What the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve!" I put my experience, education, and understanding together to guide my clients as they achieve their own successes.
I've been around a while. I've done a few things. Okay, I've done a LOT of things! My resume is a mess. Some might say it looks like a dogs breakfast. My life hasn't been based on following a single career path. I didn't spend ten or twenty years repeating the same year over and over again. And I'm actually glad of it.
And that experience, and the expertise I've gained in so many different endeavors, is what makes me valuable to you. If I haven't actually done your business, I've done something very much like it. I have done a lot of different things, from antique sales to organizing and running marketing shows, from greenhouse farming to high school and college teaching, from retail book selling to running my own private investigation agency, from installing residential alarm systems to automobile sales, from building computers to computer security, from counter terrorism to emergency planning, and from small business operation to corporate management.
I have built businesses and I have sold businesses and I have done a lot of additional things in between. I have failed miserably in more businesses than most people will likely ever think of running and I've succeeded wonderfully in a few as well. I have done alright for myself and, even better, I have helped others along the way.
I first started in business when I was quite young. I had a paper route before I was a teenager. It was, by the way, 104 customers on rural (farm) roads. Let me tell you, that's a lot of walking, and a lot of time for thinking, in the cold of a Canadian winter.
When I was around 14 I ran my own green house growing vegetables and selling them to families in the neighborhood. In high school I drove hundreds of miles on weekends to sell at antique shows all across the region. I was learning about earning a dollar and working hard. But I was also learning about working smart and how, working for myself, I could leverage my efforts into even greater results.
I really cannot remember any length of time when I wasn't involved in one form of business or another. Doing business, especially when it is helping others, is something I love. Something I have always done. Something I am good at. I guess you might say it's my calling. It's in my blood.
I've also worked for others. For small contractors and for big, multinational corporations. I've traveled widely, flown across, and between, countries and, in some years, driven over 100,000 miles. That's a lot of time in a car. What I couldn't have done with a cell phone, a Kindle, and Internet access back then!
I've worked for a roofer lugging buckets of melted tar in the middle of a dry, dusty, hot, August. I've built and serviced computers and I've manufactured and sold custom jewelry. I've managed corporate departments with dozens of employees. I've handled outside sales and I've negotiated important contracts, some in the millions of dollars. I have consulted to corporations and to governments. I've been Director, Vice President, and even President in a number of companies, and not always my own.
I've done okay over the years. I've been well off and, twice, I've been dead broke. Yep. Twice. And, through all of that, life doesn't owe me a dime. Not only do I know what works, I know what doesn't. And, when it comes to helping you, the latter may be as important as the former.
I came late to computers or, more accurately, they came to me later in life. I was an adult, already married with children, when I first worked professionally with them. It was at the very beginning of the micro computer revolution. I began with the TRS-80, the Commodore 8032, and the C-128. Although I had no formal education in computers at the time the whole thing seemed to come naturally to me. I have worked with PCs, and main frames, and servers.
I've had the wonderful opportunity to be on the Internet since before it was public. I was there in the early days of ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) and NSFnet (National Science Foundation Network), though I never did meet Al Gore. I've held security clearance to NATO Secret, and I have worked on projects covered under TEMPEST (I could tell you but I'd have to... well, you know!)
I built a very successful multi-line bulletin board system (BBS), known as AMBASSADOR BOARD, and my daughter and I taught modem application, and online bulletin board access, years before there was widely accessible public Internet. We were trail blazers then and we continue to be so today.
I have owned and operated Internet Service Provider companies (plural!), bringing early Internet access to small communities and rural areas. I have lost count of the number of websites I've built, most hand coded, for large companies and small, for personal use and business. From the Royal Bank of Canada to Mary with her small horse blog, from the Online Sellers Association to Main Street Mall Online. Several hundred at least.
For sixteen years, my wife Lora and I lived in a small town in south central Kansas where we operated our business from the convenience of an office in a converted bedroom in our modest home. We endeavored to practice a sustainable lifestyle, reducing our carbon footprint where ever we could. I've done the commute thing. I've had the corner office with a view. I've had the big house, three stories (storeys to my fellow Canuks!), white pillars, and the big cars. That's in my past.
Today, living as I choose, with far less in my life to burden me, I've finally made it. I now have the opportunity to apply my I Can! Mission Statement: To give as much value as I can to as many as I can as often as I can for as long as I can!
I am an author, website developer, small business consultant, coach and sometimes mentor, and I provide a range of support services for those who do business online. I still design, build, and manage websites, working almost exclusively these days with the WordPress content management system (CMS). I still work with HTML, PHP, MySQL and CSS but I seldom hand code a complete website any more. Though I still can, with WordPress available there is just no reason to do so.
Writing is my favorite pass time and I am now starting to get a few books published. Most of my books are in digital format and some are available on Amazon. I've learned a lot over the years. Perhaps I have something to say. And perhaps someone will be interested in listening, or reading.
