Media files include a variety of things from pictures to animations and movies. For most of us it will be image files (or pictures). The Media menu in the left column offers two choices: Library and Add New.
Clicking Add New opens the Upload New Media page where you can Select Files (button), browse, and upload them.
Once the file is uploaded the page extends to show the file information. You can edit or add to this and then Save All Changes (button).
Clicking the Library link in the left-column menu opens the Media page that displays all previously uploaded images including those uploaded in posts and pages.
